No. Virgin wool is not worse than Merino wool.
The difference is not about quality, but about the meaning of the terms.
Virgin wool describes the method of production (freshly shorn from a living sheep), while Merino wool refers to the sheep breed. We use exclusively mulesing-free wool and place great importance on responsible and animal-friendly sourcing of our materials.
What is virgin wool?
Virgin wool refers to the way the wool is obtained.
It comes from a living sheep, is freshly shorn, and has not been previously processed.
👉 This makes virgin wool the highest-quality and most original form of wool.
Whether it is Merino, lamb, or crossbred wool only indicates which sheep breed the wool comes from — not whether it is better or worse.
What is Merino wool?
Merino wool refers exclusively to the sheep breed (Merino sheep).
It can appear in different forms:
as virgin wool (new and high-quality),
as recovered wool (from production waste),
or as recycled wool (mechanically processed used textiles).
👉 The term Merino alone therefore does not indicate how new or original the wool is.
Differences between wool types (fiber structure)
Merino wool: very fine, even fibers, especially soft
Lambswool: also soft, slightly more voluminous, from the first shearing
Crossbred wool: stronger, more robust fibers, very durable
These differences explain why crossbred virgin wool is particularly well suited for slippers:
It retains its shape, is highly durable, and withstands daily wear very well.
Merino wool, on the other hand, is mainly valued for fine clothing.
Which wool do we use for Giesswein slippers?
For all of our slippers, we exclusively use virgin wool.
For the Vent and Veitsch models, we deliberately use crossbred virgin wool (wool from crossbred sheep), as it is:
more robust,
more durable,
and ideal for everyday use.
In short:
Virgin wool = highest-quality, new wool
Merino wool = especially fine, but not automatically better
Crossbred virgin wool = durable & ideal for slippers
Our material choices are always purpose-driven — for maximum comfort, durability, and everyday practicality.
