In general, we recommend waterproofing (impregnating) all shoes before wearing them for the first time, especially if you wear them outdoors, in changing weather, or on damp ground.
However, waterproofing is not strictly necessary for every material, as some of our natural fibres provide natural protection.
Benefits of waterproofing
Extra protection against moisture and dirt
Longer lifespan of the materials
Easier day-to-day care
Helps maintain the look and performance of the shoes
Shoes made of Merino wool
Merino wool naturally contains lanolin (wool wax), which is water- and dirt-repellent—so waterproofing is not strictly necessary.
➡️ It is still recommended if the shoes are often worn outdoors, in rain or snow.
Care recommendation:
A breathable textile waterproofing spray suitable for natural fibres
Preferably silicone-free to preserve breathability
Shoes made of nubuck leather
Nubuck leather is open-pored and delicate.
➡️ Waterproofing is highly recommended, as it does not have natural protection like lanolin.
Care recommendation:
A nubuck/suede waterproofing spray
Regular cleaning with a nubuck brush
Merino wool shoes with leather parts
Leather benefits greatly from extra protection.
➡️ Merino wool already has basic protection thanks to lanolin, but leather does not—so waterproofing is recommended.
Care recommendation:
A multi-material waterproofing spray suitable for textile & leather
Apply evenly—do not soak the material
Shoes made of eucalyptus fibre
Eucalyptus fibres are breathable and soft, but they contain no natural wool wax.
➡️ Waterproofing is not strictly necessary, but advisable if worn in damp weather.
Care recommendation:
A gentle textile waterproofing spray
Free from harsh chemicals
Our conclusion
Thanks to the natural lanolin in Merino wool, many Giesswein shoes already have good basic protection. Waterproofing is therefore optional, but it can add extra durability and peace of mind in wet conditions or with frequent outdoor use.
