Which materials are suitable for sensitive skin?
Choosing the right material plays an important role in comfort, skin feel and a pleasant foot climate. If you have sensitive skin or known material allergies, it is worth taking a closer look at the composition of a product.
GIESSWEIN uses a wide range of high-quality natural and functional materials – from particularly soft Merino wool and eucalyptus fibres to organic cotton, cashmere, leather and modern functional fibres.
Important: No material can generally be described as “allergy-free” or “hypoallergenic”. Natural materials can also cause allergic reactions or intolerances in some individuals. Our material recommendations are based on the respective material properties and do not replace medical advice.
🐑 Merino wool – soft & temperature-regulating
Merino wool is one of GIESSWEIN's key materials and is particularly comfortable against the skin thanks to its fine fibre structure.
Benefits of Merino wool
- 🌡️ Temperature-regulating: helps keep feet warm in cold conditions and pleasantly balanced in warmer conditions
- 💧 Moisture-regulating: can absorb moisture and release it again
- 🌬️ Breathable: supports a pleasant foot climate
- ☁️ Particularly soft: much finer than conventional wool
- 👣 Comfortable barefoot: many GIESSWEIN models can be worn without socks
- 🔄 Flexible: the knitted structure adapts comfortably to the foot
- 🌿 Natural fibre: made from a renewable raw material
- 👃 Helps reduce odour formation: its material properties support a fresh-feeling foot climate
GIESSWEIN states that Merino wool can absorb up to 33% of its own weight in moisture.
Who may particularly appreciate Merino?
Thanks to its softness and moisture regulation, Merino can be particularly interesting for people with sensitive feet, provided they tolerate wool well.
Interesting models include:
- Merino Runner
- Merino Wool Knit
- Merino Curve Max
- Merino Jump
- Merino Easy Step
- Wool Dream
- Wool Peak
- Wool Trek X
⚠️ Important for people with wool or lanolin sensitivities: Merino wool is not automatically suitable for everyone with sensitive skin. Wool naturally contains lanolin.

Eucalyptus/Lyocell can be an interesting alternative to wool if you prefer a particularly soft, breathable material or do not tolerate wool well.
However, individual allergies or intolerances cannot be ruled out.
🌱 Organic cotton – natural, soft & breathable
Organic cotton feels pleasantly soft against the skin and is a good option for people who prefer natural fibres.
Benefits
- ☁️ Naturally soft
- 🌬️ Breathable
- 👕 Pleasant against the skin
- 💪 Durable
- 🌱 Made from organically grown cotton
- 🧺 Easy to care for
For allergy sufferers?
Because of its soft and breathable feel, organic cotton can be an interesting option for sensitive skin. However, this does not mean that organic cotton is generally suitable for all allergy sufferers or is allergy-free.
🎋 Bamboo – soft, skin-friendly & temperature-regulating
Bamboo fibres are particularly appreciated for their soft feel and good moisture management.
Benefits
- ☁️ Particularly soft
- 🌬️ Pleasant against the skin
- 🌡️ Temperature-regulating

- 🔥 Comfortably warm in colder conditions
For sensitive skin?
Bamboo can be an interesting option for sensitive skin, especially if you are looking for a soft and moisture-regulating material.
Individual tolerances can vary.

Benefits
- ☁️ Very soft
- 🪶 Lightweight
- 🔥 Comfortably warm
- ✨ Luxurious feel

For sensitive skin?
Their particularly fine and soft fibres can feel very comfortable on sensitive skin.

Benefits
- 💪 Very durable
- 🔄 Elastic
- 🛡️ Abrasion-resistant
- 👣 Supports a good fit
- 💨 Can add flexibility to material blends

🧶 Elastane
Elastane is used when a material needs to be particularly flexible and stretchy.

EVA is mainly used in GIESSWEIN soles.
Benefits
- 🪶 Very lightweight
- ☁️ Cushioning

❤️ Which materials should allergy sufferers or people with sensitive skin consider first?
There is no universally applicable recommendation for allergy sufferers because allergies and contact reactions vary from person to person.
If you have no known allergy to the material, the following materials may be particularly interesting based on their properties:
🥇 Merino wool
Particularly interesting if you value soft, breathable, temperature- and moisture-regulating materials.
🥈 Eucalyptus / Lyocell
An interesting alternative if you prefer a soft, breathable and moisture-regulating material.
🥉 Organic cotton
Interesting if you prefer a soft, natural and breathable material.
🎋 Bamboo
Another option if you are looking for a soft, temperature- and moisture-regulating material.
☁️ Cashmere / alpaca
Particularly interesting if you are looking for a very soft and warm material and tolerate animal fibres well.
Important: This order is not a medical assessment or recommendation. It simply describes the respective material properties.
⚠️ What should allergy sufferers consider before buying?
1. Check the material composition
Do not only look at the upper material. Linings, footbeds, insoles and other components may also be relevant.
2. Avoid known allergens
If you know which substance triggers your reaction, compare it with the complete material composition of the product you are considering.
3. Do not wear a new product for a long period straight away
Try a new product for a short period first and observe how your skin reacts.
4. Seek medical advice if you have a known allergy
If you have a diagnosed contact allergy or recurring skin reactions, we recommend discussing material selection with your doctor or a dermatology professional.
5. Stop wearing the product if you experience symptoms
If redness, itching, burning, swelling or other symptoms occur, stop wearing the product and seek medical advice if necessary.
🔎 Are GIESSWEIN products tested for harmful substances?
Yes. GIESSWEIN states that its shoe models are regularly tested for potentially harmful substances. This includes compliance with applicable REACH requirements, and GIESSWEIN also states that its products are PFAS-free.
This does not mean that every product is suitable for every person with an individual allergy or intolerance.
🩺 Important information for allergy sufferers
Our material recommendations do not replace medical advice.
Whether a particular material is suitable for you depends on your individual allergy, intolerance and skin sensitivity.
If you know that you react to wool, lanolin, leather, certain synthetic fibres, dyes, adhesives or other materials, we recommend checking the complete material composition carefully before purchasing and asking your doctor or a dermatology professional if in doubt.
If you experience severe or recurring skin reactions, the cause should be medically assessed.
💡 Our tip
If you have sensitive feet, don't only consider the material. Fit, width, pressure points, seams, moisture management and sufficient room inside the shoe are also important.
A soft material alone does not guarantee a comfortable, irritation-free fit.
The right material is always the material that you personally tolerate well and feel completely comfortable in.
